Borobudur is a Buddhist temple

According to historical evidence , Borobudur was abandoned in the 14th century as the weakening of the influence of Buddhist and Hindu kingdoms in Java and started the influence of Islam . The world began to realize the existence of this building since it was discovered in 1814 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles , the then British Governor-General of Java . Since then it has undergone a series of Borobudur rescue and restoration efforts . The largest restoration project was held in the period 1975 to 1982 for the efforts of the Indonesian government and UNESCO , and the historic sites in the list of World Heritage Sites .
In the world of tourism , tourism Borobudur is Indonesia's single most visited tourist .

Unlike other temples built on flat ground , Borobudur was built on a hill with a height of 265 m ( 870 feet ) above sea level and 15 m ( 49 ft) above the ancient lakebed that has dried up . The existence of this ancient lake a matter of heated debate among archaeologists in the 20th century , and led to speculation that Borobudur was built on the edge or even in the middle of the lake . In 1931 , an artist and expert of Hindu and Buddhist architecture , WOJ Nieuwenkamp , put forward the theory that Kedu Plain was once a lake and Borobudur was built symbolizing a lotus flower floating on the surface of the lake . The lotus flower in the form of a red lotus , lotus blue , or white lotus can be found in all Buddhist iconography of religious art ; often gripped by Bodhisattva as a symbol of the regalia , into a cushion or as a pedestal throne Buddhist stupa . The architecture of Borobudur itself resembles a lotus flower , and the posture of Buddha in Borobudur symbolize the Lotus Sutra is mostly found in the Buddhist religious texts . Three circular courtyard at the top of Borobudur is also thought to symbolize the lotus petals . However Nieuwenkamp theory that sounds amazing and fantastic rebuttal to reap many of the archaeologists ; over land around the monument had been found archeological evidence that proves that the neighborhood during construction Borobudur temple is dry land , not the ancient lakebed .

Not found written evidence that explains who build Borobudur and what it does . Construction time is estimated based on a comparison between the type of script that is written in a closed toe Karmawibhangga the type of characters that are commonly used in royal inscriptions 8th century and 9th . It is estimated that Borobudur was built around 800 AD . This period according to the period between 760 and 830 AD , the height of glory wangsaSyailendra in Central Java , who was then influenced King Sriwijaya . Borobudur Development estimated spend 75-100 years and actually completed during the reign of king Samaratungga in the year 825 .
Borobudur hidden and neglected for centuries buried under layers of volcanic ash soil and then covered with trees and shrubs so that Borobudur when it actually resembles a hill .
