Borobudur is a Buddhist temple located in Borobudur , Magelang , Central of Java , Indonesia . This stupa temple founded by Buddhists around the year 800 AD during the reign of wangsasyailendra . Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple or shrine in the world , and one of the largest Buddhist monument in the world .

 Borobudur has the most complete collection of Buddhist reliefs in the world. The main stupa is located in the middle of the biggest building once the crown , surrounded by three rows of 72 circular perforated stupas in which there is a statue of Buddha sitting cross-legged in the lotus position .

According to historical evidence , Borobudur was abandoned in the 14th century as the weakening of the influence of Buddhist and Hindu kingdoms in Java and started the influence of Islam . The architecture of Borobudur itself resembles a lotus flower , and the posture of Buddha in Borobudur symbolize the Lotus Sutra is mostly found in the Buddhist religious texts . Three circular courtyard at the top of Borobudur is also thought to symbolize the lotus petals .
